Revelators Sound System – Revelators [Indie Exclusive Limited Edition Opaque Yellow LP]

Description

Revelators Sound Systemis the collaborativemusical project ofMC Taylor (Hiss Golden Messenger)andCameron Ralston. Recorded throughout 2020 and2021, largely at Taylor’s home in Durham, NC andRichmond, Virginia’sSpacebombstudio, where Ralstonserves as the house bassist, the album is a deep meditationon community that caroms from root-down avant-funkand spiritual groove to solitary cosmic minimalism andtwinkling dubby ambience. ImportantlymostimportantlyRevelatorsis deeply emotional record, therunning soundtrack to a world in confusion.

Grieving, with its trunk-rattling double drums andsearing electric Clavinet, imagines a rhythmic meeting ofThe Meters, post-Bitches BrewMiles andCan beforedissolving into a smoky, time-smeared coda that is a directdescendent ofLee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s headiestBlack Ark productions, while Collected Water is a mournful, pointillistic improvisation between Taylor’s drifting guitarloops, Ralston’s loping double bass, and the melodicdancing betweenDaniel Clarke’s chiming piano figures,J.C. Kuhl’s insistent saxophone and Reggie Pace’s subtle, circular percussion. Bury the Bell is a shimmering,AliceColtrane-inspired piece for guitar, clarinet and orchestrathat spins off into stardust. The album concludes withGeorge the Revelator, a lush devotional epic built atopthe on-the-one drumming ofJ.T. Batesthat shakes androlls with psychic, psychedelic fervor.

Revelatorsis a testament to the telepathic and soulfulmusical interplay between Taylor and Ralston. We onlyever talked about what emotion we were going for,Ralston recalls. We never talked about gearor fidelity.Taylor echoes this sentiment, elaborating, This record isabout grief. Grief, and whatever comes after. We werelooking for a way to communicate that musically.
